Update 10/17

It’s been a week full of ups and downs since being discharged from the hospital. The most difficult thing that I’ve had to try and get used to is daily life with this trach. Sleeping has not been comfortable by any means. Up until a few days ago! the staples in my back hadn’t been bothering me any more than usual but over the past few days they became inflamed and were extremely irritated.

I was pretty bummed out at my follow-up appointment earlier today (well, I guess at this time it would now be considered yesterday). I was really hoping to get my trach removed. She said that everything looks great and things are healing nicely. I also had a swallow test done and have been cleared to try and drink liquids only. The doctor was also able to remove the last drain in my back, stitches in my neck, and the staples in my back. However, the trach will have to stay in for at least 2 more weeks. This will hopefully allow additional swelling to go down and give me time to practice talking with my speaking valve on my trach so that I can start exercising my tongue more. Not the answer I wanted, but I know that’s not always the answer that we are given. I know the doctors know what’s best and I know that they don’t want to remove it too soon. I am thankful that they were able to go ahead and get the drain, staples, and stitches out though.
