Surgery Date Scheduled

We didn’t get home until around 8pm last night from Charleston so by then we had been going nonstop since 5am and were exhausted. My surgery date has been scheduled for Wednesday the 25th beginning 5am. They expect it will last all day.. so looking at probably 14-16 hours. Most of my tongue on that side that hadn’t already been.. will be cut out. They plan to take a muscle from my back and attach it and the vessels to an artery in my neck. They tell me I won’t be able to move it back and forth freely the other muscle in the part of my tongue that is left will just pull it along. It will be really swollen so for s while I will have a temporary trach placed so the ventilator can help me breathe and also a feeding tube for a while. We’re praying that both of those will be able to come out a few weeks after surgery. They said after surgery I will be in ICU for a few days while they monitor the transplant, then should be moved to a regular floor. I’ll pretty much be communicating by using a whiteboard as the doctor doesn’t want me to strain to try to talk for a bit. I’ll also have to work with Speech Therapy to learn how to swallow with the changes and work on my speech. Right now they won’t know until after surgery but it looks like it will be Chemo again and radiation again, but since I had such a difficult time with the radiation last time (bc it burns everything inside your mouth basically) they are also looking at possibly immunotherapy.

A few have asked me again about a GoFund Me so i’ll try and get one set up before the surgery for those who have asked. What I want mostly is your prayers and I know that many have been praying and I just want to thank everyone with all my heart.

Fun Fact: for those who didn’t know .. the pictures of the Lighthouses hanging in my office were taken by yours truly.

I was able to snap some beautiful pictures yesterday in between and on the way to and from appointments. The ones from the car didn’t turn out that great but hey, still reminded me how beautiful of a creation that God made.

Today is the Day

 It’s about 1:30 am and of course I can’t sleep. Surgery begins in a few hours and is expected to last 12-14 hours. Still somewhat nervous but it’s nowhere near as nervous as I have been. I actually feel pretty calm for the most part. Update 1/16/25

Hey y’all. First I would like to thank you all again for all of your prayers. I’ve said this many times before, but waiting to hear if your cancer has come back never gets any easier. In fact, I believe it gets harder every time.   They ended up just taking a biopsy of only the nodule in my chest (right above my collar bone). It breaks my heart again to share that it did come back as cancer. They are planning to do surgery in 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, they are going to also do an ultrasound of my thyroid nodule to see if there is concern and if a biopsy is needed there. As for the area in my tongue, they will likely take biopsies while I am under anesthesia for the surgery coming up. I don’t know why this keeps happening… I don’t know why it keeps coming back and spreading… but I have to believe that there is a greater reason for it. Please continue to pray. Visit to MUSC

We met the surgery team at MUSC for the first time yesterday. Still nothing concrete yet ; however, it's looking as though there will be another surgery to attempt clear margins, and also to maybe put in a muscle graft from another part of my body. This will require them to attach muscle vessels somewhere in my neck to get blood supply. Also, it is highly likely that I will have a trach for a while so that I can breathe properly. I may also have another feeding tube. The doctor indicates that those will hopefully be removed before discharge or shortly after. Again, this plan could change after review of my whole case. Right now, we are waiting on MRI results and also for the complete tumor board to review my case and come up with a final plan of action. Surgery will most likely not be for a few more weeks. This is going to be a long recovery...I may have to learn how to speak again, but their hope, as well as ours, is that the muscle they put in will help me be able to hopefully be...
